If you work in used-car retail, you know that every component matters when you assess a unit. One of the most relevant — and increasingly common in modern cars — is the CVT gearbox. But do you know exactly how it works, what advantages it has and how to diagnose it? In this article we explain it in detail.
The continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a type of automatic gearbox that, unlike traditional ones, does not use fixed gears. Instead, it uses a system of variable-diameter pulleys connected by a metal belt or chain, which allows an infinite range of gear ratios.

While a traditional automatic gearbox changes gear in fixed steps (1st, 2nd, 3rd…), the CVT adjusts the ratio continuously to keep the engine in its optimum rev range.
The absence of abrupt changes improves the driving experience, something private customers value a lot in city cars, hybrids and family cars.
By keeping the engine in its ideal range, CVTs optimise fuel use, reducing consumption and helping meet environmental standards.
From relaxed city driving to more demanding stretches, the CVT responds without jerks or marked transitions.
Some drivers notice a “constant drone” when they put their foot down, because the engine stays at the same speed while the car accelerates.
Although the technology has evolved, some older or poorly maintained models can present expensive faults. Checking the condition before purchase is key.
