6 key steps to register a historic vehicle

12 Jun, 2025 #Management and admin

Historic vehicle status does not only bring benefits for ITV (Spain's MOT), insurance and low emission zones. It also requires very specific conditions. One of the most important is the extra technical paperwork that supports the vehicle's authenticity and heritage value. In this article we explain in detail what you need and how to get it.

What is a historic vehicle and what advantages does it offer?

A historic vehicle is one that is at least 30 years old from first registration, keeps its original characteristics without major technical changes or whose modifications/upgrades are period-correct, is no longer in production and may have cultural, technical or heritage relevance.

👀 NOTE: historic classification can lead to listing as an asset of cultural interest (bien de interés cultural), in which case there may be restrictions on taking it out of the country, selling it or modifying it. The State also has a right of first refusal (tanteo) if it is sold (although this has never actually happened).

Key benefits

  • ITV at a wider interval (up to every 4 years).
  • Exemption from road tax (IVTM) in many municipalities.
  • Free access to Low Emission Zones (ZBE), unless a specific local by-law says otherwise.
  • Higher revaluation on the collectors' market.
  • Historic plate (starts with “H”).

Prior requirements to classify a vehicle as historic

Before you start the process, you need to meet a set of criteria:

  • Be more than 30 years from first registration.
  • Not have undergone technical modifications that change its essential character.
  • Be out of production.
  • Not be intended for daily use, only occasional use.
  • Be in good condition and able to be catalogued as of heritage, technical or cultural interest.

Procedures to obtain historic classification

There are two routes, depending on the vehicle's status:

Group A – Vehicles already registered in Spain

You only need a change of classification on the paperwork. You file a responsible declaration and the vehicle must pass a specific historic ITV. The approximate cost is €20.81 for the change of service, and €55.70 if a transferencia (ownership transfer) is also required.

Group B – Vehicles NOT registered, de-registered, or with a foreign plate

This group needs more technical paperwork. The vehicle must be assessed by a Historic Vehicle Technical Service (STVH), which issues a suitability report. It must then pass an ITV under the specific criteria for historic vehicles.

What extra technical paperwork is required?

This is the key documentation that supports classification as a historic vehicle:

Technical suitability report

A document issued by an STVH that certifies:

  • State of conservation.
  • Degree of originality.
  • Technical exceptions accepted because of its age.

Responsible declaration

A document signed by the owner declaring that the vehicle meets the requirements set by the DGT (Spain's traffic authority) and current regulations.

Colour photographs

At least four good-quality images of the vehicle (front, rear, sides) that show its current condition.

Reduced ficha técnica (summary technical sheet)

A technical document that summarises the vehicle's characteristics:

  • Make, model, engine, VIN.
  • Dimensions, weight, power and original specifications.
  • Date of manufacture and historic production data.

Modification history and certificate of conformity

If the vehicle has had modifications compatible with historic classification, you will need to submit reports that certify this and show that essential elements have not been altered or that the modifications/upgrades are period-correct.

Step by step to register it at Tráfico (Group B)

  1. Contact an authorised STVH and request the initial inspection.
  2. Receive the technical report and the reduced ficha técnica.
  3. Take the ITV as a historic vehicle.
  4. Pay the corresponding taxes (Hacienda Form 576).
  5. Submit the paperwork at the Provincial Traffic Office (Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico).
  6. Obtain the new permiso de circulaciĂłn (registration certificate) and the historic plate.

Why is this paperwork important?

  • It helps Tráfico approve your application without setbacks.
  • It lets you pass the ITV under criteria adapted to historic vehicles.
  • It adds legal and heritage value to the vehicle.
  • It increases its market value as a certified classic
