To understand the history of JLR engines properly, you first have to separate the paths of its two original brands: Jaguar and Land Rover. Although they now belong to the same group, for decades they developed their mechanical ranges separately and with very different philosophies.
In the case of Jaguar, its story was closely tied to refined, performance-oriented petrol engines with a clear sporting focus. The brand built its prestige on families as well known as the XK, the V12, the AJ6/AJ16 and the AJ-V8, all of them representative of different stages in its technical evolution.
Land Rover, by contrast, built its identity on more robust, simple engines focused on work, endurance and off-road use. From the first post-war blocks to the Tdi and Td5 sagas, its mechanical history has always been closely linked to payload, reliability in tough conditions and versatility off the tarmac. That difference in approach is key to understanding why Jaguar and Land Rover developed such different engine catalogues before they joined together.
The Jaguar Land Rover group was officially born in 2008, when Tata Motors completed the acquisition of Jaguar and Land Rover. From then on a new industrial stage began, in which both brands shared the same corporate structure while keeping their own identities. One of the major milestones of that modern phase was the launch of the Ingenium family in 2014, described by the company itself as a new generation of modular diesel and petrol engines designed, developed and manufactured by Jaguar Land Rover. Also in 2014 the company opened its new engine manufacturing centre, which meant producing powertrains in-house again “for the first time in a generation”.
With that historical base, we now review the main engines from Jaguar, Land Rover and JLR, ordered chronologically within each stage.

Jaguar Heritage identifies precisely these families as some of the brand’s great mechanical milestones: the XK as one of its most iconic post-war engines, the V12 as the great reference of its most performance-focused stage, and the AJ6/AJ16/AJ-V8 as the evolution towards more modern mechanics in its saloon and sports-car range.
Although Jaguar was traditionally a brand very focused on petrol engines, in the 2000s it also added diesel mechanics for the European market. The AJD-V6 2.7 Diesel was one of the most important of that stage, and its base was shared with the joint development between PSA and Ford.
Jaguar did not have a relevant hybrid stage before JLR was created as a unified group. The brand’s electrification arrives clearly in the later phase, under the group’s common structure.
Land Rover’s petrol history is strongly marked by its first work engines and, later, by the arrival of the Rover V8s, which carried huge weight in models such as Range Rover and other off-roaders from the brand. In these cases it is worth remembering their external origin, because that V8 family comes from the well-known Rover/Buick base.
At Land Rover, diesel mechanics have enormous historical weight. The 200Tdi, 300Tdi and Td5 are probably some of the most recognisable names from the brand in the off-road and used-car world. Later came blocks such as the TDV6, TDV8 and Td4, in a stage when shared engines, external origins or industrial developments linked to other groups already appear.
Land Rover did not have a significant hybrid range either before the unification into JLR. The brand’s real electrification starts in the later group phase, with the arrival of MHEV and PHEV systems based on JLR’s modern architecture.
In this stage we are already talking about engines launched under the corporate umbrella of Jaguar Land Rover. The first two cases, the AJ-V8 5.0 and the AJ126 3.0 V6, are especially interesting because they belong to the group’s modern stage, but they come from a technical line clearly linked to Jaguar. Then comes the big transformation with Ingenium, presented in 2014 as the group’s new modular engine family and put into production for a new generation of Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles.
On the diesel side, the JLR stage mixes two very clear moments. On one hand, the AJD/SDV blocks inherited or developed with external collaboration; on the other, the arrival of Ingenium, which marks the move to a generation of modular powertrains designed and produced already within the group’s new industrial strategy.
JLR’s hybrid phase arrives with the progressive electrification of the range. First come PHEV configurations such as the P400e, and later both mild hybrid systems and the plug-in hybrid variants with greater range are consolidated, among them the P510e and P440e. In Land Rover’s official communications, these systems appear tied to six-cylinder Ingenium engines and to a clear strategy of expanding the group’s electrified offer.
